England: Infection with Bonamia exitiosa

England: Infection Bonamia exitiosa on wild oysters (Ostrea edulis )

Location: Turnaware Bar - River Fal, Cornwall ,

Start Date: December 6, 2010

Date of first confirmation: 21 February 2011

Affected population: A wild population of Ostrea edulis. Samples were made because of the oysters collected in this area were in poor condition and not due to an associated mortality. The oysters were small, showed a loss of fluid and did not close. On three of the 30 oysters sampled, parasites like Bonamia were observed by histological examination. PCR and gene sequencing confirmed the results obtained by histological examination:

  1. A case of Bonamia (already present and controlled in this area)
  2. A case of Bonamia exitiosa
  3. A case inconclusive It is unclear if the bad state of health of oysters can be attributed to Bonamia exitiosa. On February 21, 2011, IFREMER (Reference Laboratory of the EU) has confirmed the presence of B. exitiosa in an animal.

Other Epidemiological comments: B. ostreae was already present in the area. Once the suspicion of the presence of B. exitiosa established, travel restrictions were applied to all mollusc species and the initial measures extend across the estuary of the River Fal.

The current regulations prohibit all movement of shellfish to, from and within the control area and provides that the dead molluscs are removed using an approved method for removing waste products from animals of Category 2.

This population of O. edulis may have been under stress due to dredging of the area during the summer of 2010 to manage a problem of red algae.

Dauge claims its purity: "The 25 tonnes of oysters that I produce are born, raised and refined in the Basin. It is my choice and satisfaction. And I see that it works, that customers are satisfied. "...

Dauge Eric does not regret his choice of a traditional oyster whose engine is the deepest passion: "Everyone does what he wants, but must explain to consumers what they buy oysters. Hatchery oysters is farming, not the oyster. These oysters are all the same, then they should all be different. I earn less money, but it does not matter. I'm in the sense of history. I did well to follow my path and not to become a carpet salesman. With my 100% Basin oysters, my conscience and sense of myself from the crowd. And then the current state of the oyster strengthens his resolve. This year, Eric was asked Dauge 14 000 30 000 tiles and bowls collection. On each manifold, there are 50 to 70 oysters after the first wave of winter deaths due to herpes-virus: "I can make ends meet, I collect all the oysters. But hey, we still live day to day. I know that spring 60% of these young oysters will die in their turn. "...

Aquaculture: Commissioner Damanaki meets Ministers of five landlocked countries to discuss the future of aquaculture Freshwater

Press Release - 23/02/2011

Maria Damanaki Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, received February 21, 2011 the Ministers of Agriculture of the Czech Republic Ivan Fuksa, Hungarian Sandor Fazekas, Zsolt Simon Slovakia, Austria Nikolaus Berlakivich and the Director of International Affairs Luxembourg's Frank Schmidt.

The ministerial delegation presented to the Commissioner Damanaki a "Joint Declaration on the future role of freshwater aquaculture and inland fisheries in the CFP reform." The two sides exchanged views on prospects of freshwater aquaculture and its contribution to the supply of fishery products of high quality for consumers, economic growth and employment in rural areas and preservation of the environment and biodiversity. They agreed that freshwater aquaculture should be prioritized within the framework of the future Common Fisheries Policy and its funding instruments.

Landlocked countries have surface water and large river systems. They have a long tradition in inland aquaculture (lakes, ponds, rivers), water bodies which also have non-productive functions, such as the fight against floods, water retention, landscaping and rural development. They produce about 40,000 tonnes of whole fish (3% of EU production). They receive from the European Fisheries Fund financial assistance of 81 million euros for the period 2007-13.

His plan to support and promote a competitive and sustainable farming based on two directions. First, by facilitating investment opportunities for the sector to grow within the EU. This will include actions to reduce administrative barriers and to promote and enable the planning taking into account environmental constraints. Secondly, with particular emphasis Financing of aquaculture within the European Fisheries Fund and its successor post-2013. Finally, special efforts must be taken for the promotion of organic aquaculture.
