The ball of the Society of Men Gras in New York, February 1877

To wait until the update this week which will come later today or tomorrow (Sunday, 30 January), a brief sympathetic:

Here is a verbatim transcript of a brief article from the newspaper Le Canadien , February 26, 1877, p. 2:

FAT MEN - The annual ball of the Company of Men Gras in New York in recent days, in Irving Hall, did not begin with his usual enthusiasm. Several members, by performing the compulsory weighing above the ball, had found that their weight has decreased since last year. Away on a cloud of sadness many fronts. Mr. Samuel McGraw, particularly, seemed inconsolable. It weighs only 327 pounds. Forty pounds lost in one year! However, when the music gave the signal to walk, and that fat men, each with a fat lady on his arm, began to march, waddling, fronts were a little cheered. A little later, a quadrille of the Lancers provided the most agile dancers of both sexes with opportunities to distinguish who brought good humor, and when we sat down at midnight and a half before the tables laden with food plump all faces were fulfilled.
